The Evolution of Imagination and Civilization From Animism to Monotheism: Introduction to Comparative Religion
The Evolution of the Modern Mind: From the Ancient Greeks to America
The Worldview of the Qur’an: Spirituality, Praxis, Culture, and Justice
We live in a complex world in which religions intersect in intricate ways. Religious interconnections have been a constant means of cultural and civilizational growth. The contemporary world has brought religions in direct contact in numerous ways. In this context, humanity cannot afford religious ignorance. Religious literacy is essential for world peace. Literacy also goes a long way in enabling us to appreciate our own religious tradition. Islam is the youngest of the major religions coming out of the axial age and carries its own genius and uniqueness the appreciation of which requires us to take stock of all other major traditions that preceded it. Join us on a journey across humanity’s religious traditions and their contributions to the modern imagination.
The seed of religion, when enduring, grows into a civilization. The complexity of the civilization depends on the complexity of the religious vision. Coming at the heels of the axial age religions, Islam’s simple seed of monotheism (tawheed) harbors a complex vision of spiritual and sociocultural transformation. This vision is scattered across the expanse of the Qur’anic discourse and is not easily discerned. The seminar brings together relevant Qur’anic passages in a bid to impart a coherent worldview.
The modern civilization is the first global civilization. Its influence impacts all levels of experience. As we transition through a decisive moment in modern history which may yet witness its demise, it is imperative to understand its foundations to better inform our perspective on the future. This seminar takes quick glimpses of the significant milestones in the making of the modern civilization thorough an encounter with the Renaissance, the Reformation, the Scientific Revolution, the Enlightenment, classical modernity, and the contemporary age of postmodernity. We will end the course with a meditation on the possible role of Islam in what seems to be a pivotal transition in history.
